Everybody needs a Christmas.
It doesn’t have to be Christmas, per se. It can be a Hanukkah or a Midwinter or a Solstice or Dōngzhì or a Kwanzaa or a Yaldāor or a Soyal; the name, ultimately, isn’t that important. What’s important is that, in the Northern Hemisphere, these days are our coldest and darkest, our most hopeless and deadly. They’re the days when we remember to pay fealty to that which helps us survive each and every winter: to light, to the engines of civilization, and most significantly, to each other.
Because we need each other, you see. We need to come together, not to just merely survive but to thrive, to bask in the warmth of each others hearts and to keep the shadows at bay. Without that, all we do is subsist, living tiny little vampire lives without benefit. We need each other. We need love.
So, what we’re saying is: go love someone today. It doesn’t matter if they’re your Significant Other (whatever the hell that means) or some rando on the street. This is the root of all that smarmy Christmas bullshit: it’s not about Good Will Towards Men because some uncaused cause is telling you to, fuck, it’s not even because of some atheistic sense of “the right thing to do.” It’s because we all need love, need need need it to survive. We’re all lost without it. So buy a stranger a drink. Curl up with your main squeeze and watch trash TV. Donate some old coats to charity. Just let the world know that you love it, and know that it loves you right fucking back and there’s no way that’s not true because we wouldn’t have made it this far without it
We love you all. Each and every one of you. Have a merry Christmas.
